PDIP Malang Waits for Megawati’s Decision, What’s Up?

The fight to seize the seat of Malang Mayor in the 2018 election would be fierce. However, the seizure of candidates for the mayors to get recommendations from PDIP Central Executive Board (CEB) is no less exciting because there are seven figures registering as candidates for mayor through PDIP until last night (15/6).

Five figures who registered as candidates are Gandung Rafiul Nurul Huda, Sutiaji, Arief Wicaksono, Wanedi, and Wahyu Eko Setiawan. While the two names that register as a candidate for vice mayor is I Wayan Sutama and Daniel Sitepu.

Of the seven figures, the fight between Sutiaji and Arief Wicaksono to pocket the recommendations of PDIP CEB is expected to be the most stringent because both are public figures. Arief Wicaksono is now serving as chairman of Malang City DPRD and becomes the chairman of Malang City PDIP. He was also PDIP cadre. Meanwhile, Sutiaji is now still the deputy Mayor of Malang. However, he was on originally a PDIP cadre but PKB.

However, who among them is likely to get a recommendation from the PDIP depends on a single decision of PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Arief Wicaksono is very optimistic about this recommendation from Megawati because the nomination mechanism has been stated in PDIP Regulation No. 4 of 2015 in internal party. One of the articles states that PDIP is obliged to carry a mayoral candidate if the vote of legislative elections reaches 20 percent of the vote.

“We have met the conditions. The acquisition of PDIP Malang in Legislative Elections 2014 then reached 23 percent of the vote, so it is mandatory to nominate candidates for internal party, “said the legislator from the Lowokwaru Electoral District. At that time, PDIP managed to gain 80 thousand votes to deliver 11 cadres sitting in the legislative seat. With that acquisition, PDIP can carry its own party candidate.

After signing up to become a candidate PDIP Office yesterday (15/6), Arief confirmed the reason to register because of encouragement from all PDIP subsidiaries. However, Arief will invite other parties to coalition, especially to fill the position of candidate for deputy mayor. “Seeing the phenomenon that occurred in the field, we have to coalesce with other political parties if you want to win,” said the alumnus SMPN 8 Malang City.

Arief was sure, Megawati will consider the achievements that PDIP Malang City has carved in his leadership era. One of them is a vote of 80 thousand in the legislative elections last 2014. Of that achievement, added Arief, Megawati should recommend PDIP’s own cadres. “However, whatever will happen later, I as a party officer will keep following orders, so we’ll see the development of the political situation later. There will be no twin sun for sure,” he stated.

The impossibility of twin sun means that there will only be one cadre chosen to be the mayoral candidate of PDIP to avoid split votes like in the 2013 election. At that time, there were PDIP cadres who defend Pudji Heri Utami-Sofyan Edi Jarwoko and some others supported Sri Rahayu-Priyatmoko, so the two couples were defeated by Moch. Anton and Sutiaji.

When touched on the possibility of him with Sutiaji being a pair in the 2018 election, Arief just beckoned if PDIP indeed needs duet cadres of a nationalist and a religious. Arief Wicaksono represents the nationalist and Sutiaji represents the religious. “What Malang City needs in the future is nationalist and religious hand in hand. However, back to the rules and Articles of Association and Bylaws PDIP, internal candidates must be the mayor,” he said.

Contacted separately, Sutiaji is also optimistic that Megawati will support him to run for the 2018 election. “I took the form for a recommendation from PDIP CEB,” Sutiaji explained. According to him, although he was not a member of PDIP, he spiritually has a vision-mission and views that are in harmony with the party.

Sutiaji also claimed to have a lobby lane that would smooth down the recommendation from Megawati. He knew that in fact he could register in PDIP East Java and directly to PDIP CEB. However, since the elections are in the regions and he respects the registration mechanisms in the regions, he chooses to register at PDIP Malang. “I don’t need to tell about the recommendation, but I’m sure I’ll get it,” he said.

His experience in gaining votes during the legislative elections in 2009 to deliver him as a parliament member plus a successful win in the 2013 election helps Sutiaji run. “Although I was initially underestimated, I have had ideas of building the system until I became a council member and won the mayor election. I will keep using that system,” he added.

In addition, Sutiaji still avoided commenting on the possibility of pairing with Arief. He just revealed that he had communicated with Arief before taking the form. “He welcomed my step of registering. Anyone who will get the recommendation has the same goal for the good of Malang,” he said. (lil/c2/abm)
